Loan Disbursements
Parent PLUS Loans are typically disbursed in two equal payments—one for the fall semester and one for the spring semester—and are made co-payable to the parent borrower and Gallaudet University. If the student has any outstanding non-institutional or past balance charges, any refunds from the loan must first be applied toward those charges.
Repayment
Repayment of principal and interest generally begins within 60 days after the loan is fully disbursed, unless the borrower requests a deferment while the student is enrolled at least half-time. Interest begins accruing from the date of disbursement. Parents should contact their loan servicer to request deferment or for repayment plan options.
Eligibility Restrictions
Parents may not borrow a PLUS Loan if they are in default on a federal student loan or owe an overpayment on a federal education grant. Additionally, parents who have had a federal student loan discharged due to total and permanent disability (TPD) may not be eligible for a new PLUS Loan. Eastern University+1
Options if Loan is Denied
If a Parent PLUS Loan is denied due to credit, dependent students may:
-
Increase their federal Direct Loan eligibility by being treated as an independent student for loan purposes.
-
Obtain an endorser (co-signer) for the Parent PLUS Loan.
-
Appeal the credit decision by providing documentation of extenuating circumstances to the loan servicer.
Students should contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss options and submit any required documentation.
Application Process
Parents must complete the Parent PLUS Loan Application and Master Promissory Note (MPN) at studentaid.gov each year they wish to borrow. A credit check will be performed as part of the application process.
