GI Bill® and VA Educational Benefits
GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by the VA is available at the official U.S. government website: https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill.
Gallaudet University is committed to serving America’s veterans and has a long history of supporting their educational success.
Eligibility and Certification
-
Applicants must apply for educational benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill® with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
-
All veteran education beneficiaries must obtain a VA Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
-
The COE must be submitted to the VA School Certifying Official (SCO) at Gallaudet.
-
The COE includes information about veteran status, benefit eligibility, and classifications required for VA certifications.
-
Students may only participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program during an academic year when Gallaudet University is an approved participant.
Enrollment and Program Compliance
-
Students eligible for VA educational benefits must request semester-by-semester enrollment and program certification with the university’s VA SCO.
-
Academic program compliance must be documented. Each student is required to have their advisor submit a copy of the annual program evaluation or complete the Student Advisory Program Compliance Form for VA Educational Certification.
Certification Requirements
-
VA certifications require active term enrollment.
-
Certifications must be submitted within 30 days of the start of a semester.
-
Initial certification can be submitted by the SCO; any updates (dual certification) require the student to have completed both course registration and business registration according to university policy.
-
Audited courses cannot be certified. Students requiring full-time status must maintain a full credit load exclusive of audited courses.
Reporting Changes
Students are responsible for notifying the SCO of any changes in their status, including:
-
Changing major programs or course schedules
-
Seeking to be a guest student at another institution while enrolled at Gallaudet
-
Withdrawing from a course or auditing a course
-
Withdrawing from Gallaudet University entirely (transfer or end of studies)
-
Any pending or resolved campus judicial matters
-
Any charges or incarceration for a crime
